Nanolope Secures Pre-Seed Funding for Thermal Energy Storage in Existing Buildings

[introduction]

Berlin, August 20, 2026 – Berlin-based deep-tech startup Nanolope has closed a €800,000 pre-seed financing round. The round was backed by IBB Ventures through its Pre Seed Fund B#, as well as several experienced business angels and industry experts from the energy, real estate, and materials technology sectors. The funding will be used to scale production of Nanolope’s thermal energy storage systems, implement initial pilot projects, and expand the team.

Nanolope develops innovative and sustainable materials for thermal energy storage in existing buildings. Nanolope ceiling panels can transform walls, ceilings, and floors into passive thermal storage systems. The result: a more stable indoor climate with lower heating and cooling demand, as well as reduced CO₂ emissions and peak loads. The vision is a world in which clean energy is affordable for everyone and available whenever it is needed. Nanolope develops its materials according to the principles of green chemistry. The thermal storage systems are manufactured without rare earth elements and are largely recyclable.

The building sector is one of the largest consumers of energy in Europe. Particularly in existing and commercial buildings, outdated heating systems, poor thermal performance, and increasing energy-efficiency requirements lead to high costs and emissions. At the same time, comprehensive renovations are often expensive, time-consuming, and economically difficult for many property owners to implement.

The transition to sustainable heating will be decided in existing buildings,” says Dr. Felix Marske, CEO and Co-Founder of Nanolope. “Many properties need solutions that can be retrofitted quickly and economically, without major structural interventions. That is exactly what we are developing with our thermal storage panels.”

Nanolope’s solutions are aimed in particular at housing companies and operators of commercial properties such as hotels, offices, and cafés. The goal is to make existing buildings more energy-efficient while improving thermal comfort for residents and occupants.

Nanolope’s storage panels offer several advantages:

  • Reduced heating and cooling loads
  • More stable indoor temperatures in summer and winter
  • Retrofitting without extensive building renovation
  • Lower energy consumption and CO₂ emissions
  • Use of recyclable and durable materials

Dr. Felix Marske adds: “Our goal is to enable buildings to serve as thermal energy storage systems in the future. This will allow us to make more efficient use of renewable energy and significantly reduce the energy demand of buildings.

Sabine Wolff, Principal at IBB Ventures, on Nanolope: “The team convinced us with its expertise, experience, and ambition to set new standards in the construction industry with its patented energy storage materials in the face of climate change.

About Nanolope

Nanolope GmbH was founded in Berlin in 2025 by Dr. Felix Marske, Eric Matthes, and Dominik L. Schreiber, LL.M. The company has developed a patent-protected thermal energy storage technology for existing properties, with the aim of making buildings more energy-efficient, climate-friendly, and economical. The focus is on passive heat and cold storage systems for residential and commercial buildings.

About B#

With the B# – “be sharp” – pre-seed fund, IBB Ventures is investing a total of €10 million in deep-tech startups during the particularly challenging early stage. With ticket sizes ranging from €100,000 to €400,000, the fund specifically targets teams developing scalable and innovative deep-tech approaches in areas such as AI, quantum technologies, industrial software solutions, robotics, environmentally and resource-efficient technologies, and biotechnology, including innovative applications for medicine, healthcare, and sustainability. As proceeds from exits are reinvested, the model creates a mechanism that sustainably strengthens the innovative power of Berlin’s deep-tech sector. B# is financed by the European Union under the EFRE STEP (Strategic Technologies for Europe) program. B# – be sharp
